The main interest of our group is the identification of mechanisms of cancer prevention by food and food constituents. The established techniques are focused on the analysis of signal transduction and gene and protein transcription. In the first period of the project, we could show that a polyphenol-rich extract of a consumer-relevant apple juice blend was found to potently inhibit the growth of human colon cancer cells enhance apoptosis (programmed cell death) and affect proliferation-associated signaling cascades. The characterisation of active constituents and the identification of potential biomarkers of chemoprevention in the colon are under current investigation.
