Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) show an increased prevalence in industrial countries. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract that can also affect other organ systems (bones and joints, skin, eyes). The main symptoms are bloody diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain and complications including the development of fistula and stenoses. The diseases typically affect young adults. Quality of life is often greatly diminished for the patients. Patients affected are also a high risk group for developing colon cancer. Our aim is to investigate if apple juice constituents can prevent or modulate inflammatory processes in the colon.

Period: 1.9.2005 – 31.8.2009
