In the present project, our goal is to characterize potential low- and high-molecular weight cancer chemopreventive components in apple juice extracts, fecal water and fermentation supernatants of apple juice cloud particles, respectively, by activity-guided fractionation in cooperation with project 1.1, and to elucidate their mechanisms of action. Based on the results of in vitro experiments, we will also investigate some to the material in the APCMin/+ mouse model to evaluate the relevance of our in vitro findings in vivo. Further, we will analyze the potential of fecal water fractions to modulate biomarkers in in vitro test systems. These investigations will help to better understand biological modifications which occur during colon carcinogenesis, to find possibilities for their prevention, and to develop strategies for the transfer of the results to the human situation.
