Epidemiological studies have shown a relation between the risk for developing colon cancer and the risk for developing diabetes typ II and adipositas, respectively. Adipositas and concomittant increase of serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure are correlated to a significant increase in the risk of colon cancer. Both diseases are widespread in Western Europe. For both diseases, high energy intake (fat, carbohydrates) is a risk factor. In contrast, a reduced energy intake and a high intake of secondary plants metabolites from fruits and vegetables are discussed to act in a protective manner. In this project, we conduct human intervention studies as well as animal experiments to investigate the potential of cloudy apple juice and its major constituents on biomarkers of colon carcinogenesis and adipositas/diabetes typ II.
